Longson Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Longstone.' Great Longstone is a chapelry three miles from Bakewell, Derbyshire Little Longstone is a hamlet almost equidistant from the same town. Many names ending in -son are local, the 't' in the suffix -stone being elided. It is just possible that Longson is an abbreviation of Lawrenson (the son of Lawrence), a surname peculiar to Lancashire. To many this will seem the more probable derivation. To one or the other Longson must be referred. Nevertheless the fact that Longson is a Derbyshire name is strong evidence in favour of my first view.
