Of local origin from some place name ending in -hope. In the trial of Agnes Sympson, 1590, the name is misprinted Lenchop and as Linkup in the trial of Dr. Feane (Trials, I, p. 211,236). There is a Lauchope in Lanarkshire from which the name might be derived, but none of the references point that way. Patrick Luikup in Melrose, 1605. Thomas Lookupe there in 1657, Andrew Lukup or Lukupe in Danyielton, 1662, and Thomas Lukupe in Melrose, 1663 (RRM., I, p. 3,141; II, p. 33, 65). Janet Lukup was resident in Edinburgh, 1623 (Edinb. Marr.), William Lukup was master of works in Drumlanrig Castle, 1685, George Loukup, wright in Maxwelheugh, 1683 (Peebles CR.), John Lookup, advocate in Edinburgh, 1734 (SCM., III, p. 240), and Andrew Lookup was bailie of Jedburgh before 1771 (Heirs, 358). William Luckup or Lukup, smith in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, c. 1745. Loukwp 1649, Lowkwp 1651, Lucup 1682.
