From Lorraine, a province of France. Roger Loren, the first of the name in Scotland, witnessed an agreement between the Chapter of Moray and Sir Alan Durward, 1233 (REM., p. 97). Dominus Roger de Loranger witnessed a charter by Morgrund, son of Abbe, c. 1239 (SHSM., IV, p. 316). The -or is merely a flourish over the g mistaken by the copyist for -or. Roger Lohering was juror on an inquest, 1244, concerning the behavior of certain Scottish knights charged with being accomplices of William de Marisco and other enemies of the king of England, accused of piracy in the Irish sea. Eustache de Loneyne and others were in 1333 directed by Edward III to survey the Castle of Berwick. In 1358 the king of England granted the barony of Coverton to James de Loreyns or de Loreygne, a Scotsman (Bain, IV, 12; OPS., I, p. 399), and in the following year for his ' services and steady obedience" he had an annuity in recompense for the loss of his lands (Bain, IV, 24, 28). James de Lorreyn or Lorreyne witnessed a charter by Roger de Auldton, c. 1354 (Kelso, p. 287,391), and in 1358 he witnessed the grant of the forest of Eteryk to John Kerre (Roxburghe, p. 8). Robert ae Lorreyne, juror on inquest made at Roxburgh, 1361 (Bain, IV, 62). Bessie Lome in Blainslie, parish of Melrose, 1563 (Lauder), Alexander Lorain, notary in Dunse, 1699, and John Lorain, merchant there, 1710 (ibid.). William Lome in Stitchel, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 108). David Lorain died at Grantshouse, Berwickshire, 1940.
