Losty Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Ó Loiste This name has long been associated with Donegal. Variants are Lasty and Lusty. SIF 106

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

This ancient name has become Lastly in some places, whence the corruption to Leslie, the form in which it is usually found in Co. Donegal to-day. The main Leslie families in Ulster, however, are of British origin. Losty in Irish is Ó Loiste; and as such, or as Ó Loisde, it is found in our mediaeval Irish records, e.g. the Annals of Loch Cé, which chronicle the death of John O'Loisde, abbot of Assaroe, Co. Donegal, in 1502. In more than one anglicized form it occurs in the Antrim hearth money rolls of 1669 and also, unexpectedly, in those of Co. Tipperary of a few years earlier.

In any of its forms-Lasty, Losty or Lusty-the name has now become very rare.
