Scaccarii Normanniæ): Robert de Lovent, John his son, and Henry de Lovent, in Buckinghamshire; William de Lovent in Bedfordshire, during the reign of Edward I. - Rotuli Hundredorum. Unless this be an interpolation, it cannot refer to the noble family of Lovaine of Estains in Essex, who descended from Henry IV., Duke of Brabant, by Maud, daughter of Matthew, Earl of Flanders, and bore Gules, a fesse Argent between ten billets Or. Their ancestor Godfrey was this Duke’s younger son, and held in 1200 the Honour of Eye in Suffolk, which had been given to the Duchess of Lovaine in Richard I.’s time.—Dugdale.
