This surname is derived from a geographical locality. Probably 'of Loudson,' a parish in Ayrshire The surname has crossed the border and is well known in Cumberland.

1753. Married —Thomas Dalby and Sarah Lowden: St. George's Chapel, Mayfair.
(1) From Loudoun in the district of Cunningham, Ayrshire. Sir James Dalrymple states (Collections, p. lxv) that he had seen a charter by Richard Morevile, Constable, Jacobo filio Lambini of the lands of Loudoun and others also another charter by William Morevile Jacobo de Loudun terram de Laudun. "I doubt not" he says, "but Jacobus filius Lambini in the first Charter, was of Clidesclcle, and Son of that Lambinus, who gave the name to Lambintoun, and in the second Charter took the proper Sirname of Loudoun from his Lands." Margaret, the only child of James, was married to Reginald de Crawford, sheriff of Ayr, and carried the lands into his family (Caledonia, I, p. 551). John de Lowden was perpetual vicar of Kilpatrick, 1418 (LCD., p. 239). Nicholas de Loudoun or Lowdon held a tenement in Irvine, 1418—26 (Irvine, I, p. 126,130), and Thomas Lowdain was burgess there, 1499 (Simon, 1). James Lowden of Culmain, 1793 (Dumfries). (2) The surname Louden, current in Fife, is perhaps a spelling of Lothian, which see. John Loudone and Thomps Loudain are recorded in Dunfermline, 1582 (Dunfermline). compare R. L.
