Olay Loutfut was tacksman of Sandisend in the parish of Deerness, 1502 (REO., p. 412). The name early spread to Shetland, appearing there in 1427 as Lutzit (z = guttural y) (in Torfaeus, Orcades, 1697), but is said now to be extinct there (Mill, Diary, p. lxxxix).
