This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Loveday.' Of the same class as Christmas, Pentecost, Nowell, &c. The font-name lingered on as Lowdy in Cornwall, the last refuge of many old English favourites, till the 18th century, and is not yet extinct. 'John Lovdesman' (John, the servant of Loveday) occurs in the Hundred Rolls, 1273, in Norfolk. The word occurs in Piers Plowman: 'I kan holde love-dayes And here a reve's rekenyns.' Halliwell says: 'A day appointed for settlement of differences by arbitration.' 'But helle is fulle of suche discorde, That ther may be no loveday.' - Gower MS. Soc. Ant.
