In this instance, the place referred to is Lovaine, an ancient and well-known city in the Netherlands, and early instances of this derivation date back to 1273, when a Godfrey de (of) Luvayn is listed as a resident of Bedfordshire in the Court Rolls of Henry II. The Hundred Rolls of the same year include a Mathew de Lovayn in County Suffolk. Alternatively, the surname may be baptismal in origin, deriving from the Old English personal name Leofing, recorded frequently in the 1066 Domesday Book, and appearing thereafter as Leouing, Luuing, Levingus and Levinge.
