Luce: the Old English name for a pike, but also for a lily (the fleur de luce), has given a name to the Lucy family at Guy’s Cliff and to others elsewhere. The wife of one of my farmers was a Luce. Shakespeare got into trouble with Squire Luce, or Lucy, J.P., for poaching, and he revenged himself on him by drawing him as Justice Shallow: “Slender. A dozen white luces in their coat.
Shallow. It is an old coat.”
Actually, the Lucy family bore as arms three pikes naiant; but as Lily and Lilley it exists as a surname, taken from the sign for the Annunciation.
