(English) belonging to Ludlow (Salop), A.D. 1274 Ludelawe, Ludelowe, &c., earlier Lead- lowe [The second element is Old English hlǽw, a hill, (burial-) mound: the first is evid. Old English leód-, either in the form of leóde (pl.) people, or leód (from), nation, or leód, prince. The Welsh seem to have called Ludlow Din Llys - Tywysog = the Hill of the Prince’s Palace; but if the first element of the English place-name were a transla­tion of the Welsh tywysog = prince, we should have expected a genitive form Ludslow.
