Old English leód-, either in the form of leóde (pl.) people, or leód (from), nation, or leód, prince. The Welsh seem to have called Ludlow Din Llys - Tywysog = the Hill of the Prince’s Palace; but if the first element of the English place-name were a translation of the Welsh tywysog = prince, we should have expected a genitive form Ludslow.
