Families of this name long had connection with Berwickshire, more particularly with the estates of Srottiswoode and Marchmont. The name is also found early in Glasgow. Adam (p. 138) says the habitat of the Lukes was the shores of Lochfyne, and that they are an offshoot of the Lamonts. Some Maclucases Englished their name as Luke (Buchanan of Auchmar). Henry Louk was curate in Linlithgow, 1530 (Johnsottn), John Luke or Louk rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the bailies of the burgh of Rutherglen, 1564—67 (ER., XIX, p. 277,370). John Louk was made burgess of Glasgow as burgess heir, 1582, and a later John Louke received the same privilege in 1691 (Burgesses). John Lowk is recorded in Eister Dalbeth, 1587 (Protocols, x), Daniel Luck in Little Dalganross was fined for reset of Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 639), William Luck or Luik was member of Scots parliament for Forfar, 1650 (Hanna, II. p. 503), and Alexander Luke was dyer in Milntoun of Cluny, 1763 (Dunkeld). Lowik 1549. (2) Luke is now used as a shortened (English) form of MacGille Mo-Luaig.

Amongst the Essex gentlemen who contributed to the fund collected for the defence of the country at the time of the expected invasion of the Spanish Armada in 1588 were Henry Luckyn, a donor of £25, and William Luckyn, a donor of £50 (Sp.) Mashbury manor was in the possession of this family in the 16th century, and Lukyn was then an occasional form of the name (M.) The Luckyns of Messing Hall, and of Little Waltham and Chicknall - Smeley, in the 17th century, possessed a baronetcy and served as high sheriffs of Essex; from them sprang the ennobled house of Grimston (M.).
