Lundin Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The name Robert de Lundyn, Lundin, Londen, or Lundris appears several times in record about the end of the twelfth and in the early years of the thirteenth century. Some writers have thought they were distinct persons deriving their surnames from Lundie in Angus, or from Lundie in Fife, or perhaps from both places. The editors of the Charters of the Abbey of Inchcolm have shown that this opinion cannot be accepted. "There was only one Robert de London-although his name appears in more than one form-and he appears most frequently before the accession of Alexander II. His mother was evidently Matilda Ferrers, who was married to Richard de Londonia, and Robert seems to have adopted his step-father's name." The evidence adduced in support of their opinion seems conclusive (p. 109). John de Lundoniis witnessed King William's grant of Kinbethach to Gilbert, earl of Strathern, c. 1178—80 (LIM., p. xxii). John de Lundin witnessed a charter by Roger, bishop elect of St. Andrews, concerning the church of Hadintun, c. 1189—98 (RPSA., p. 153), and John de Lundoniis witnessed a grant to Arnbroath Abbey, c. 1200 (RAA., I, 10). Philippus de Lundin was a witness to many royal charters from before 1195 to 1204. "Presumed to have been son of Walter son of Philip the Chamberlain, who had a charter of Lundin in Fife from William the Lion early in his reign, and took his surname from the lands. The Lundin family ended in an heiress in the seventeenth century; she married a Maitland, and the heiress of the Maitlands of Lundin carried the estate to her husband, John Drummond, created earl of Melfort" (Inchaffray, p. 270) Walter de Lundy was juror at Perth, 1305 (Bain, II, 1670), and John Lundy was a witness in 1458 and 1462 (Neubotle, 245,289). Another John Lundy "of that Ilk" was one of the conservators of the three years' truce in 1484 (Bain, IV, 1505). John Lundy had remission for his part in burning the town of Dunbertane, 1489 (Lennox, II, p. 133), Jhone of Lundy had precept of a charter of feuferme of lands in Fife, 1499 (RSS., I, 419), and Katherine Lundy was wife of Patrick Culess in Fife, 1517 (ALHT., V, p. 102). Walter Lundye had a charter of the lands of Schanvell with rabbit warren, etc., in 1546 (RD., p. 395). Andrew Lundy was charged in 1558 with abiding from the raid of Lauder (Trials I, p. 404), David Lundy had a charter of the land of Lathalland in 1596 (RD., p. 494), and John Lundy was retoured heir of Master William Lundy de eodem his father, 1600 (Retours, Fife, 83). James Lundie, heritable proprietor of the town and lands of Skeddoway, resigned the same in 1637 (Dysart p. 50). Issobella Lundie was retoured heir portioner of William Lundie in Sutherfauldfeild, 1620 (Retours, Fife, 304). Robert Lunder, laird of Balgonie, was admitted burgess of Glasgow, 1618 (Burgesses), and George Lundie, was church elder in Dysart, 1641 (PBK., p. 209). James Lundie of Spittle, 1711, and four more of the name in the neighborhood are in record (Lauder), and Rev, John Lundie, minister of Lonmay for 54 years, died in 1807.
