Lundy Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Since the compulsory registration of births was introduced in 1864the name Lundy has been mainly found in Ulster (particularly Cos. Cavan, Down and Antrim) though some families are located in north Connacht. In the Downpatrick area it has been recorded as a corrupt synonym of MacAlinden but it is improbable that this is the origin of the name in most cases. In 1665 it was quite numerous in Co.
Tipperary, as the hearth money rolls attest, and the Lundys were no newcomers to this county then, for in the Ormond Deeds we find John Boy Lundey, a Co. Tipperary witness, giving evidence at the age of 100years in 1533,and more than a century earlier a cottager of the name is recorded for the same part of the country. In 1297 Gilbert de la Lounde was murdered by O'Mores; in 1307 it occurs as Lunde.
Lundy is not given in the standard dictionaries of British surnames and I think the Norman de la Lounde may be accepted as normally the original form of the name in the Tipperary-Kilkenny area. I have no evidence of how it became comparatively numerous in Ulster. Col. Robert Lundy, whose name will be always remembered in connexion with the Siege of Derry, was an Englishman. His subsequent career after his escape from that city is not known-perhaps he settled in Ulster.
1 Heavy, Clumsy [Dialectal English lundy; perh. from Old Norse lundi (m.), a puffin (Lundy Island—O.N. ey, island—is said to owe its name to this bird] 2 Bel. to Lundie (Forfar) [doubtful: perh. Old Norse lund-r, a grove + ey (Scoticized to ie), island, waterside] 3 the French surname Lundy, from lundi= Monday [Latin lunœ dies, moon’s day]
Though historically associated with Derry Lundy (Norman de la Lounde) occurs quite frequently in mediaeval records relating to Cos. Tipperary and Kilkenny.
SIF 107
(English) One who came from Lundy (puffin), an island in Devonshire.
1. The island in the British Channel. 2. The French Lundi, i.e. Monday.
