From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Walter and William Luz appear in the Norman Exchequer Rolls of 1198, and are conjectured to have belonged to the same family as Robert de Los, to whom Philip Augustus in 1219 granted lands in Normandy (Mémoires de la Société des Antiquaires de Normandie). There exists a place called Los in the Duchy, from which the name was probably taken. John de Los is named in the same Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniæ of the twelfth century. Julianus de Losa was of Kent 1189-90 (Rot Pip.): John and William de Lose of Norfolk, circa 1272 (Rot Hundred.). Three generations of the Kentish family, holding the vill of Lose (Loose) of the Prior of St.Trinity, Canterbury, are mentioned in the Pedes Finium; the last of them, William de Lose, was living in 1204. In Norfolk, Goscelin de Lose paid a fine 34 Hen. III.; and Ralph de Lose (infirm) another in 41 Hen. III., for not attending the hundred court (Crown Pleas Roll). A branch was evidently settled in Ireland; for Jordan de Luse witnesses the foundation charter of Woney Abbey, Limerick, by Theobald Fitz Walter Pincerna (Mon. Angl).
