Gaz.). Luton is in the vale where the R. Lea has its source. The Lea occurs in the Anglo-Saxon Chron. (A.D. 895) as ‘úp on Lygan,’ variantly Lygean, Ligean and Ligenan, suggesting as the origin the early form of the Welsh llugain, glittering, gleaming, sparkling-llug, a gleam; conn. with Welsh llygas, splendour, radiance: + Old English tún,enclosure,estate, village.
