From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(Celtic + English) belonging to Luton (Beds). This (and not Leighton Buzzard) is prob. the Lygetún of a charter of Offa, King of the Mercians, granting various lands to the church of St. Alban’s (‘A portion of Luton formerly belonged to St. Alban’s Abbey.’—Nat. Gaz.). Luton is in the vale where the R. Lea has its source. The Lea occurs in the Anglo-Saxon Chron.
