From Old English Liulf (Ligulf). Johannes filius Lyelli was park-keeper of Plater, 1329 (ER., I, p. 145,147), and John Liel or Lyel was treasurer of the church of Brechin, 1411—34 (REB., I, 34, 62). William Lyell had a tenement in Edinburgh, 1414 (REG., 324), and Gilbert Lyell was juror on inquisition at Arnbroath, 1452 (RAA., II, 93). Master Andrew Liolle was treasurer of Aberdeen, 1468 (Bain, IV, p. 280), and Alexander Liel was admitted burgess there, 1484 (NSCM., I, p. 31). Three sons of Patrick Lyell, bailie of Aberbrothock, went to Sweden in 1638, and became prominent manufacturers there. A son of one of them was ennobled in 1717 and died in 1729, Sir Charles Lyell (1797—1875) was one of the founders of scientific geology. Liale 1442, Liell 1517, Lile 1561, Lyale 1435, Lyll 1646.
