Two origins axe offered for this name: (1) Probably from Old English personal name Leodgeard, "of which Leggett is the regular diminutive" (Weekley); (2) from the office, "the legate," an ambassador, a delegate, ME. legal, legate. This, I think, is the chief or only parent of the name. Adam Legate who rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the bailies of Stirling in 1406 (ER., IV, p. 59) appears again in 1412 as burgess of the town (Cambus., p. 63). Walter Leget or Legat of Scotland had safe conducts into England in 1421—2, and Master John Legat had a safe conduct to pass to Rome in 1448 (Bain, IV, 911,915, 1206). Thomas Legat of Tayn witnessed a notarial instrument, 1477 (Cawdor, p. 63), Laurence Legat possessed a tenement in Irvine, 1540 (Irvine, I, p. 66), and. Archibald Legate was burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1574 (Burgesses). John Leggat was "baxter and burges of Stirling, 1591 (Sc. Ant., VI, p. 166), and Thomas Ligat is recorded at the kirk of Steuartoune, 1670 (Corsehill, p. 94). Six brothers named Leggat from King Edward served in the first Great War (Turriff). Probably confused with Lidgate, which see. Liegait 1611, Liegatt 1603, Liggaitt 1696.
