Maandig Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The surname Maandig originated in the Philippines. It was first used in early 1900 by the four siblings who migrated in Mindanao after they left the Province of Camiguin, Philippines from where they lived. These four siblings originally used the surname Francisco at the time of Spanish regime in the Philippines, together with their parents and other three siblings left in the Province of Camiguin.

During their occupancy in Camiguin, they had been an elite in the society dealing with friars. They had been producing and trading tobacco from Camiguin to different provinces in Mindanao, particularly in Misamis Oriental as the most near and accessible province.

The four siblings decided to migrate, who were using Francisco at that time, in the Province of Misamis Oriental where vast area had been a potential for their living. From their occupation in the central part of the province, now known as Cagayan de Oro City located in the province, it had been a struggle for them as most of the people living in the area were Muslims. They had consensusly decided to use Maandig that derived from the word "digmaan" meaning "war", and reversed it from "dig-maan" to "maan-dig". Because of their intelligent moves, muslims had accepted their occupancy as their surname "Maandig" sounds to be muslim, though they looked physically tall, handsome and beautiful, and big people.

Maandig clan has been a native in Cagayan de Oro City since the early 1900. Within the years, their children and children's children were spread throughout Mindanao, throughout the Philippines. Presently it can be observed that a lot of Maandig were living from different countries worldwide.

This means that Maandig is originally linked from Francisco which should be treated as relatives.
