Probably from the Old British name Maban or Mabon seen in Clach-Mabanestone on Gretna Mains, Dumfriesshire. Mabon, son of Mellt, and Mabon, son of Modron, occur in the Welsh Mabinogion (ed. Nutt, London, 1904, p. 139,162, etc.). William Maben in Galloscheills, 1657 (RRM., I, p. 149) and John Mabane or Mabone in Coblehouse, 1662 (ibid., II, p. 5, 15). Margaret Meben appears in Bromdykes, 1673 (Lauder), and Thomas Mabone was ordained minister of Gordon, 1685 (Thomson, Lauder, p. 238). William Maebine in Kirkcudbright signed the Test in 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 248), John Maban in Conhaith, parish of Carlaverock, 1639 and David Maban, tanner in Dumfries, 1785 (Dumfries), and William Maiben is recorded in Stirling, 1717 (Sc. Ant., VI p. 87).
