From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Gaelic MacAdaim, 'son of Adam,' from the unaspirated form of the name, Dolfinus mach Adam witnessed a charter by Ernaldus, bishop of St. Andrews, c. 1160—62 (RPSA., p. 128). Nel mkKadan, Donald mkKadam, and Fynlay McKadem held part of the lands of Calady in 1460, and Neyl mkKeden appears again in Calady in 1474 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 130,198). John M'Cadame was retoured heir of Duncan M'Caddame, burgess of Ayr, his father, 1609 (Retours, Ayr, 115). The Macadams of Waterhead, Ayrshire, of whom John Loudon Macadam the famous road-builder was a member, claim to be descended from a Macgregor of the first half of the sixteenth century who fled to Ayrshire Recently Mr. Roy Devereux, great-grandson of the roadbuilder, in a letter to the press says: "During my researches for the biography of my ancestor which I am now writing I have found no evidence whatever in support of the tradition that the McAdams are descended from the McGregors." Peter M'Caddame had sasine of lands of Craiglure in the earldom of Carrick, 1615 (Laing, 1742). M'Addamand M'Caddam 1581, M'Adame and M'Addame 1605 Maccadam 1604, M'Caddim 1684, McCadamus (Latin) 1671, Makadam and Mackadam 1592, Makadame 1621, Makcaddam 1569, M'Kadam 1647.
