From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACCAILEIN: The Gaelic designation of the duke of Argyll. In older poetry the form Mac Mhic Cailein also occurs. Sir Walter Scott's 'MacCallurn More' has no authority in Gaelic. Scott got a good deal of his Gaelic from Highland chairmen, and, of course, it was not quite literary. In the first edition of John Major's Historia, published in Paris, 1521, he says that the people of Argyll swear by the hand of Alan the Great ("per manurn Alani Magni"), as if he understood Argyll's patronymic to have been Mac Ailein and not Mar Cailein Mhoir. Mac Chailein is 'Colin's son.' MacCalin and MacCallin 1555.
