Gaelic MacAilin or MacAilein, 'son of Allan, which see. Dungall M'Alayne was tenant in barony of Buittle, 1376 (RHM., I, p. lx). Gilfelan M'Allan was one of a number who were accused at Stirling assizes, 1477, of the slaughter of Gillaspy MacClery, John McCallane was tenant of Drumnamark, Ardmanoch, 1504 (ER,, XII, p. 661). Alexander roy McAllane McReynald and Innes McAllane McRenald had remission for offences, 1541 (ALHT., VIII, p. 19). Robert M'Allane was retoured heir of Allan M'Allane of Langilwinax, his father, 1555 (Retours, Bute, 2). Finlay Macallan appears in the Chanonry of Ross, 1578. William McAllan was a follower of Murdow McCloyd in the attack on the galley of the laird of Balcomie, 1600 (RPC., XIV, p. cxxiii). The Aberdeenshire Macallans are said to be descended from an Allan Macfarlane who settled there "several centuries ago" says Buchanan (Inquiry, p. 78), and his son instead of calling himself MacFarlane adopted the name MacAllan.
