From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
'son of the charioteer,' from OG. ara, 'charioteer (Pedersen, II, p. 101). The surname is still current in Perthshire. Macaras were classed as a sept of Macgregor, and were settled in Perthshire mainly in Balquhidder and on the Braes of Monzie near Crieff. They appear as portioners of Drymmie in Strathearn during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and several individuals of the name appear around Dunblane within that period (Dunblane). Dowgall McCarres 'tennent to the Laird of Weyme' and John McCarres Leich in Easter Innervaik were fined for reset of Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 634,636). John M'Arna, officer at Ayr, 1614 (Ayr, p. 149). Donald M'Array was portionor of Drumny, Perthshire, in 1667 (RMS., XI, 1078). The Baron McAra was a Perthshire heritor in 1688 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 332). Rev. John M'Cara was ordained minister of the Burgher meeting house at Burntshels near Kilbarchan, c. 1745, and one M'Carro was concerned in the Rebellion in the same year. Donald M'Ara is recorded in Dalmore, Glenalmond, 1749 (Dunkeld); James M'Cara of Crieff matriculated at Glasgow University in 1769, as also did John Macara of the parish of Buchanan in 1771; John M'Caira was a private in the Reay Fencibles in 1795 (Scobie, p. 374); and Sir Robert Macara, colonel of the Black Watch, was killed at Quatre Bras in 1815. Balmacarra in Lochalsh appears to be "village of Macara.".
