From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

These names are found mainly in the shires of Ayr and Wigtown. The full form was Mac Gille Blaan, as shown by the name Gilcomgal mac Gilblaan, who witnessed a grant by Ranulfus filius Dunegal, c. 1124—65, of his heritage in Dumfries to the Hospital of S. Peter of York (Bain, II, 1606; Edgar, p. 217). Forbes (Kalendars of Scottish saints) says S. Blaan or Blane was son of Etha. sister of S. Cathan, His day is August 10, A.D. 590. In the life of the saint compiled by George Newton, archdeacon of Dunblane, he is said to have been son of a daughter of Aidan, king of the Scots Dalriads. There is a notice of the amerciament of one M'Blane in 1473 (ALHT., l, p. 11), and Patrick M'Blayne or M'Blane was a witness in Wigtownshire in 1484 (RMS., II, 1623). John McBlaine, witness in Irvine, 1500 (Simon, 7), John M'Blayne or M'Blane and Nic. M'Blane appear as burgesses of Wigtown in 1536 and 1539 (Laing, 408; RMS., III, 1971), and Gilbert M'Blayne was burgess there in 1527 (M'Kerlie II, II, p. 161). Thomas M'Blane was clerk of Glasgow diocese and notary public in 1618 (Laing, 1793), and Andrew M'Blaine in Kilkerran, Ayrshire, was charged with molestation in 1628 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 543). McBlean 1649, Mackblayne 1690. Recorded in Edinburgh 1942. The Mac seems to have been dropped by some of the name early in the eighteenth century.
