From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The name MacBrearty is numerous in Donegal and rare elsewhere. According to Woulfe it is a corrupt form of MacMurtry (i.e., he says, Mac Muircheartaigh). This is to some extent corroborated by the fact that in Milford district MacMearty and MacMerty have been recorded by local registrars as in use synonymously with MacBrearty and MacBrairty. However such usage is often due to ignorance rather than etymology or tradition: MacBrearty is a case in point, for the Glenties registrar reported that there some members of a MacBrearty family called themselves Brady. MacMurtry on the other hand is not so recorded in the years under review by Matheson. MacMurtry on the basis of its modern distribution must be classed as an Antrirn surname; it is akin to the Scottish name Murdoch which is very numerous in Co. Antrim. MacMurdoch is a sept of the Scottish clan MacDonald; MacMurtrie of the clan Stuart of Bute.
