From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACBRECK: Sir Andrew M'Brek (M'Brec, Makbrek), who appears frequently in the Lord High Treasurer's Accounts at the end of the fifteenth century, was almoner to King James IV. In 1504 there was a petition in his favor of collation of the provostry of Lincloudane (RSS., I, 1017). Alexander M'Brek appears as burgess of Perth, 1522 and 1531 (SCM., IV, p. 198; Methven, p. 45). Sir Archibald M'Brak was a pope's knight of Cambuskenneth Abbey, 1546 (Laing, 505), Alexander Makbrek was witness in Edinburgh, 1552 (Aboyne, p. 55), Henry M'Brek had feu of quarterlands of Lurg from Abbey of Culross, 1587 (PSAS., LX, p. 82), and Alexander McBrek was heir of Robert Merser, 1608 (Retours, Perth, 1090). As the church of Dunrod in Kirkcudbrightshire, not far from Kirkmabreck, was dedicated to S. Mary and S. Brioc, the latter a disciple of S. Germanus of Auxerre, the name is probably connected with him. Symson (Description of Galloway, p. 46) states that about thirty years previous to the time of his writing (i.e. c. 1650) part of a statue in wood of S. M'Breck, as he calls him, was to be seen in a chapel at Ferrietown, a little clachan upon the Cree.
