MACBREW: An old Strathblane surname possibly derived from 'Gilcolmun filius Dovenaldi Macbref' mentioned in an inhibition by the bishop of Glasgow directed against Malcolm, earl of Lennox and his adherents in 1294 (RMP., p. 203). The name means 'son of the judge,' from britheimh, the genitive of britheamh. Alexander Makbreif, a follower of Donald Gorme of Sleat, had a remission for his part in the hership of Kenlochew and Trouternes in 1541 (RSS., II,3943), and Angus McBref, John Dow McBreif, and Angus McKeane Bref were followers of Murdow McCloyd of Codzauch in Lewis in his attack on the galley of the laird of Balcomie, one of the Fife adventurers, in 1600 (RPC., XIV p. cxxiii).
