MacCabe Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Gaelic M'Caibe. In the Book of the Dean of Lismore (p. 90) the name appears as M'Caybba, and the editor says 'the name is a rare one though still existing in the Highlands.' John McKape (McCabe or McRebb, as his name is also spelled) was sent prisoner to Edinburgh, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 407,430, 439). Angus filius M'Kabei, 1349 (REA., I, p. 80) is probably a miswriting for genitive of Maccabeus. "The family of MacCabe are now widely spread through the midland counties of Ireland, especially through Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan, and Meath, where they are remarkable for their xanthous complexions, their vivacity and vigour. They are evidently a branch of the Macleods of Arran, and would appear to have migrated to Ireland in the fourteenth century" (O'Donovan). The earliest mention of the name in the Irish annals is in the year 1368, when Hugh MacCabe was slain. "The MacCabas first appear in Irish history in the fourteenth century as leaders of galloglochs, i.e. mercenaries of Norse-Hebridean origin, under the Irish princes of Breffny and Oriel. They followed the profession of condottieri for two centuries or more, their chiefs being known by the titles of Constable of Oriel, Constable of Breffny, and Constable of the two Breffnys, Fermanagh and Oriel. The tradition of their Norse origin is still known in East Breffny (Co. Cavan). Distinctive Hebridean forenames, such as Alan (Aleinn), Somhairle (Sumarlidi), were formerly frequent in their families" (MacNeill, p. 39).

User-submitted Reference
There are those who call it 'Maccabeo', a term used - in in collegiate jargon - by French medical students to indicate the corpses/cadavers (As well as the cataract - guardians of the rivers - the nineteenth century saying 'Macab' or 'the drowned'). In the Transalpine region, an ancient French saying 'Ma-cabre', was referred to misfortune. In Arabic 'maqbara' means tomb and 'maqabir' cemetery; in Syrian 'Maquabrey' is the name of the undertaker (or Gravedigger). A curious discovery quite recent: in 1419 a chaplain of the Holy Innocents Church in Paris was called Laurentis Macabre.
Also in France, with the last name of a family of Troyes, French artists of the fifteenth century, who made extensive use, were designated, in fact, similar macabre representations. A rather intricate road, but certainly suggestive, is undertaken by the French scholar Naskidashvili when, finding in the dialects of the Morvan, the Meuse and the Vendôme area the term 'Abre Macabre', it refers to the clouds that fray (v. unravel or become worn) and were popularly compared to the famous Dance.
