MacCalmont Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MacCalmont was listed in Petty's “census” of 1659 as one of the “principal Irish names” in the barony of Belfast; but that list includes several surnames such as Bell, Miller and Eccles which cannot be so described. MacCalmont is in fact of Scottish origin, being a sept of the clan Buchanan. It has since its introduction into Ireland been continuously associated with Co. Antrim. Woulfe says that the Gaelic form Mac Calmáin is a variant of Mac Colmain, which would make it cognate with the Irish name Coleman (Irish Families p. 83): that could be so etymologically, but may be discounted genealogically.
