From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A corruption of Gaelic Mac Ambrois, 'son of Ambrose.' This name was formerly current in the Mull of Kintyre. Flora MacCambridge escaped with the infant son of Archibald Macdonald to a remote cave near the Mull of Kintyre in 1647 (Celt. Mon., III, p. 25). William Ambrois obtained letters of homing against the earl of Argyll in 1604 (RPC., XIV, p. 413), Neill M'Camrois is in record in South Kintyre in 1605 (HP., III, p. 80), and John Ambros or Ambrois, man to Neill Stewart, was due fines for resetters of Clan Gregor in 1614 (RPC., XIV, p. 657—658). John Ban M'Camridge is in record in Forline, parish of Kilcalmkill, 1693 (Argyll Inv.), and Donald McCambrois was tenant in Killoane, Islay, 1686 (Bk. Islay, p. 497). The surname has spread to the British colonies, Queensland, Tasmania, and New Zealand. In Antrim the name has become Cambridge and Chambers.
