This is a variant of MacKay (Mac Aodha) which is now, and has long been, numerous in Ulster.
Mac Cay alias MacKay it appears in the “census” of 1659 as a principal Irish name in the northern baronies of Co, Antrim and as MacCay a few years later in the Hearth Money Rolls of Co. Armagh.
No doubt this and similar variants were also found elsewhere e.g. Mortagh MacCae was one of the Papist transplantees from Co. Clare in 1657; and the list of synonyms published by Matheson from reports received from local registrars shows that it has also been equated with MacCoy and with Mackey.
