MACCLACHER: 'Son of the mason,' from Gaelic clachair, a mason. Fergus Maklaucher held the 10s. land of Makclauchereistoun ('town of the son of the mason') in Carrick in 1538 (RMS., III, 1849). Thomas Begg Mc chlachar and Thomas Moir Mc chlachar were charged with being 'engagers' in Urray in 1649 (IDR., p. 159,368). John McClacher was 'tounes officer' of Inverness in 1671 (More Culloden papers, I, p. 170), and another John McClacher appears as a wright in Comrie in 1681 (RPC., 3. ser. vii, p. 47).
