Ir. Mac Giolla Edin, 'son of the servant of (S.) John,' and so same as Maclean, which see. Donald Makclune had sasine of the lands of Barneill in Ayrshire, 1514 (ER., XIV p. 563; Ros, 84). Sir Andree McClune was vicar pen sioner of Suthik, 1539 (RSS., II, 3213). William McClun in Ballairdis was charged in 1621 with refusing to give instruction in his trade of tanning (RPC., XII, p. 432). Robert Macclone of Holmes appears in the same document as McClune, 1624 (Hunter, p. 51). Robert M'Clune was retoured heir of Robert M'Clune of Holmes, his father, 1647, and David M'Clean (this spelling represents MacGiolla Eain) was retoured heir of Robert M'Clane of Holmes, 1673 (Retours, Ayr, 409,590). Samuel M'Clune in Mulloch, 1786 (Kirkcudbright). McClun 1635, M'Clwn 1514, McClwne 1624.
