MacColl Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Gaelic MacColla, 'son of Coll,' which see. Maccolls have been long settled in Appin and around Ballachulish, and though said to be of Macdonald race they followed the Stewarts of Appin, being native men to the latter. Eighteen Maccolls in Stewart of Appin's regiment in the '45 were killed and fifteen wounded (Coll., p. 199). Historical references to the name are very meagre, and though the etymology of the name from the personal name Coll might infer a connection with the Macdonalds the precise meaning of the name is not quite clear. One of the most distinguished of the name was Evan McColl (1808-98), author of Clarsach nam Beann (The Mountain minstrel'). The earliest known Maccoll of those who held charters of the lands in Glasdrum was Paul MacColl, who must have lived about the year 1500 (Clan MacColl journal, III, p. 53). A payment of £25 Scots was made to Mathew M Kall, merchant burgess of Edinburgh, 1720 (Guildry, p. 123). Two men named MacColI, were servants to James Stewart of the Glen. "Although cited in the trial as MacColls, they do not seem to have been MacColls at all. At least the writer of the tale writes, for the most part, MacSholla and Clan Sholla. In Campbell's ms. Tales they are. said to be descended from a certain Solla, who lived near Oban, and eventually settled at Innseag in Appin (ms. West Highland tales, V, I, p. 210). They are said to have been once Barons of Bealach (braigh Dhail na Tragha), but that during the Wars of Montrose they sold their lands and went to live in Letter-more at the foot of Beinn a' Bheithir. It is apparent that the name of Solomon was in the family, for one of the Crown witnesses cited was Solomon MacColl, merchant in Auchindarroch" (TGSI., XXXV, p. 399).
