Maccolm Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
For the Irish Mac Coluim, Woulfe gives the modern forms MacColum, MacCollom, Colum etc.: he derives this from colum, dove. Elsewhere he states that Mac giolla Choluim is son of the follower or devotee of St. Columcille. For this name he gives only one modern form viz. the very rare MacElholm, obsolete forms being MacGillacollom etc. I find this in a Fiant dated 1601 and relating to Co.
Wexford and Mac Gil Colum (prior of Ardstraw, Co. Tyrone 1179) in the Four Masters. Woulfe's statement that MacColum is an Ulster surname chiefly found in Antrim, Tyrone and Donegal is correct both for the present day and for the seventeenth century when Petty's “census” listed MacColum as one of the principal Irish surnames in Co. Antrim; but I am not convinced that these families are basically Mac Coluim rather than Mac Giolla Choluim. In modern times the name is approximately equally numerous with and without the prefix Mac. As Colum (or the variants Collum, Columb) it is found in appreciable numbers in Co. Longford. Proof may be forthcoming that these represent a small distinct midland sept and are not part of the larger Ulster one.
In the seventeenth century Collum occurs as a synonym of the English name Culme e.g. in the lists of regimental personel in the Ormond Manuscripts.
The best known of the name is a C0. Longford man, the poet Padraig Colum (b. 1882).
