This Gaelic surname still exists in England and Australia. My grandfather Ernest McCouaig (1893-1954), was born St Pancreas, Greenwich and emigrated to Melbourne Australia c. 1910 and there married. Two children Ernest and Elizabeth were born to the marriage. Ernest later married again in Brisbane, Queensland and children Robert, Richard and John were born. Families of these children now reside in Adelaide, South Australia, Melbourne, Victoria and Brisbane Queensland. All use McCouaig as their surname.
Ernest, also had a brother Robert who emigrated to Canada and dropped the 'o' from his name using the more common McCuaig.
There are people using the McCouaig surname in England and Ballycastle, Northern Ireland. Originally our McCouaig ancestors came from Rathlin Island, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland, which is just across the water from Ballycastle and the Island of Islay, Scotland from whence the family may also have come after being driven down the islands of the Hebrides from the Scottish highlands. There is a place name called Cuaig on the west coast of the northern highlands.
