From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Maccuithein, MACCUIDHEAN: A minor Macdonald sept near Storr in Skye, Clann 'ic Cuthain (or Cuithen). They have not borne a good reputation if any value is to be attached to a line of rhyme concerning them:

"Clann 'ic Cuithein chuir an t-sodail."

(Clan MacQuithen, expert in base flattery).

Ruaraidh Duadh Maccuithean was story-teller to Lord Macdonald, from whom he had free lands for his services (CG., 2. ed., II, p. 375), and Campbell obtained one of his West Highland tales from Donald MacCuidhean (West Highland tales, IV, p. 456). In Kilmuir there is Baile Mhic Cuitliein, 'Macqueen's township,' (Forbes, Place names of Skye, p. 57), and in North Uist there is Cnoc Cuithein. See Macqueen and Macquein.
