MacCutcheon Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This name is nowhere mentioned by Woulfe though it is quite numerous in, Ulster, its estimated population figure being approximately one thousand, mainly found in Tyrone and Antrim, but also in adjacent counties. It is originally a Scottish surname, being formed from the Scottish christian name Hucheon: this in turn came from the Old French Hueçon, which in England became Hutchin, forming the surname Hutchings, while in Scottish Gaelic Hucheon became Huisdean or Uisdean. From this came the surname Mac Uisdin which may be rendered Mac Uistin in Irish Gaelic. Woulfe does treat briefly of this, but though he gives nine anglicized forms of it (MacQuestion, MacWhiston, Houston etc). MacCutcheon is not among them. (He also records Mac Oistín, with Costin and Costen as equivalents, deriving this from the English Hodge). As already stated in a brief footnote in More Irish Families MacCutcheon occurs in the Donegal Hearth Money Rolls of 1663. The wills proved in the diocese of Derry take the name back to 1684 in that area. No doubt it was there from the time of the Plantation of Ulster. It may be added that in the Newry-Poyntzpass area Kitchen and Kitson are both used synonymously with MacCutcheon, while examples of the latter have also been recorded from Enniskillen.

MacCutcheon, MacHutcheon, MacQuisten and Houston are all branches of the Scottish Clan MacDonald.

Supplement to Irish Families (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

There are nine variant anglicized forms e.g. Mac Question, MacWhiston, Houston. Kitchen is a synonym in Co. Down. SIF 48
