From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
MACEDOLF: 'son of Edolf,' i.e. Eadulf from Eadwulf, an Old English personal name. Gillmychel Makedolf witnessed a grant by Maldoueny, earl of Lennox to Stephen de Blantyr c. 1248 (Levenax, p. 36). Michael, the son of Edolf, doubtless the same person, served on an inquest at Dunbretan in 1259 (APS., I, p. 89 after the preface), and in 1271 as Gilmychel MacHedolf he served on another inquest in Dumbarton (RMP., p. 191). Gillemichel MacEdolf and Donecan MacEdolf were jurors on an inquisition regarding the lands of Stephen de Blantthyre in 1263 (Bain, I, 2338). Donecan is probably the Duncan Maggadelfe of Cambroun, Stirlingshire, who rendered homage in 1296 (ibid., II, p. 205). Duncan Macedolfe witnessed a confirmation by Bruce to Sir John Colquhoun in 1308 (Lennox, II, p. 407). and Duncan Macedolf was juror on an inquisition re the lands of Thomas de Cremennane in 1320 (Levenax, p. 82).
