MACELLAR, Maceller: Felanus Ylarii witnessed a charter by Duncan Campbell, lord of Lochow, 1432. This is the Latinized form of Felan Mac Ellar, "it being imagined that Ellar a purely Celtic name was equivalent to Latin Hilarius or Hilary. The MacEllars held the lands of Cruachan on Lochaw. and also Maam and Kilblaan near Inveraray for many centuries and frequently appear as witnesses to Argyll charters (Duke of Argyll, Oban Times, 27 Nov. 1926). I venture to think the Duke is in error and that the name is the same as Mackellar, which see.
