From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Gaelic MacEoghainn, 'son of Ewen,' which see. Gilpatrik mac Ewen was one of the perambulators of the lands of Kynblathmund, 1219 (RAA., I. p 162). Malcolm mac Ewen is witness to a charter by Malcolm, second earl of Atholl of the church of Dul to St. Andrews a. 1174 (RPSA., p. 246). Patrick McEwyn was provost of Wygtoun, 1331 (ER., I, p. 358). Johannes M'Eogan was cited in 1355 to give evidence regarding the lands of Glassre in Argyllshire (HP., II, p. 139). George Makewin, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder, 1526 (RSS., I, 3386 , Donald Dow M'Coull VcQuhewin in 1574 was 'heddyt' (beheaded) at Kenmore by Campbell of Glenurquhay. John Makewin in Ediramuikie and James Makevin in Kayndknok, his brother, are in record, 1580 (BBT., p. 224). John McEroune, merchant burgess of Glasgow, 1633 (Sasines, II, 471), is an error for Macewen. John M'Eun alias Fleger in Icolumkill, was denounced rebel, 1675 (HP., I, p. 298). Buchanan says the Macewens "for divers ages have been seneciones or genealogists of the" Campbells (Enquiry, 23), but apparently the Campbell seanachaidhean were really Macdougals. Duncan M'Ewin VNeill V'Arn, witness at Dunstaffnage, 1597 (N&Q., 11 July 1931, p. 23). This Duncan "was clearly a member of the family of hereditary bards to the Campbell chieftains. They held Barmolloch in Lorne as such, the property descending to the nearest heirs male that happened to be 'rhymers.' They were Macdougals by origin" (Henry Campbell, loc. cit.). Some Macewens in Breadalbane were Macdougalls and a few were Maclarens (FB., p. 362). Complaint was made against Allester Ma Kewin or McEwin, servant to Lord Drummond, 1581 (RPC., III, p. 350,355). Eouin M'Eouin in Slignish Ardnamurchan, in record, 1696 (Argyll Inv.). The name is still common in Lennox and Galloway. McAine 1691, M'Evine 1528, McEvin 1677, M'Ewine 1638, Mackewin 1603, McKewyne 1546, McEwn 1724, in Galloway (1684): McKewn, McKewan, McKuinn, McYewin. Makewn (Parish). Other old spellings are: M'Eun, M'Kevin, M'Kewin, and M'Yowin. There was a M'Ewinstoun in Ayrshire, 1622 (Retours, Ayr, 212).
