From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Gaelic MacPhetruis and MacPheadruis 'son of Peadrus' (Peter). Gilbert Makfedderis is mentioned in 1503 (RSS., I, 937), Donald McPeteris was tenant of Kilkyne, Tiree, 1541, and Gillecallum McFinlay McFetheris in Howfe (ER., XVII, p. 614). Remission was granted in the same year to Gillecallum M'Federis and his brother Peter M'Federis for their part in the burning of Allane donnand (Eilean Donnain) and other crimes (RSS., II, 3943) Gilbert M'Fedreis in Knokyn and Thomas M'Fedreis in Corspoui were jurors on an inquisition in the bailiary of Kyle-Stewart, 1587 (RMS., V, 1437). M'Phedreis in Luiffistoun witnessed an instrument of sasine in 1618 (Laing, 1793). McPhedrice is an old form of the name in Galloway, and MacPhedderis in the parish of Ballantrae (Paterson, II, p. 87) It appears as Macfatridge in Nova Scotia. As the name is = Paterson, some of this latter name may have been originally Macfetridge. McPhetrus 1704. M'Fatridge (in Halifax, Nova Scotia.)

Woulfe gives the Gaelic form of this name as MacPheadruis (son of Petrus, the Latin of Peter); I presume he had some authority for adding that the family was “not improbably” an offshoot of the O'Breslins” (see More Irish Families, p. 42). It is essentially an Ulster name. It occurs in Co. Antrim in the “census” of 1659 as MacPhetrish; and MacPhatricks which is also there is probably a variant of the same name not of MacPatrick (q.v. infra). From Co. Antrim, too, came Lieut. MacPhedris and his relative William MacFetrick, two of the defenders of Derry at the siege of 1689. Woulfe distinguished between MacFettridge (Mac Pheadruis) and MacFetrick, which he makes MacPhadraic: They are, however, usually synonymous. MacFettridge is numerous to-day in Counties Antrim and Derry but not elsewhere.
