MacGahey Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
According to Woulfe MacGahey (with its variants MacGaughy etc.) is Mag Eachaidh in Irish, this being another form of Mag Eochadha (MacGeough, More Irish Families, p. 126) which in turn is etymologically akin to Mac Eochadha (MacKeogh, Irish Families pp. 199,200). MacGahey is definitely an Ulster name and its location is approximatley the same as that of MacGeough. Woulfe regards Gaffey as another variant of MacGahey. It is certainly not used as a synonym: Gaffey belongs almost exclusively to the country around Athlone. The Gaffeys cannot be regarded as one of those septs which migrated from Ulster to Connacht in the wake of the O'DonneLls in the early seventeenth century since they did not come from Donegal nor did they settle in north Connacht. O'Dugan in the “Topographical Poem” mentions 21sept called Mac Gaibhidh whose location in Connacht O'Donovan was unable to determine, but as the poet describes their habitat as a land of fruit it was clearly not in Connemara or on the Atlantic coast. I think, therefore, that we may regard the Gaffeys as a distinct south Connacht sept whose name in Irish is Mac Gaibhidhe.
