MacGilchrist Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This is Mac Giolla Chríost in Irish, i.e. son of the servant of Christ. In the “census” of 1659 it is returned as MacIlchrist among the principal Irish names in the three northern baronies of Co. Antrim and one “titulado” in that county is given as Gilcrist. Woulfe considers most of these Gilchrists of north Ulster (where the name is most numerous today) to be of Scottish origin. Certainly MacGilchrist is a sept of two Scottish clans, MacLachlan and Ogilvie. Be -that as it may, there is no doubt that the Gilchrists of Co. Longford and north Connacht are true Gaelic-Irish in origin. The name appears in the modern birth registrations in many variant spellings, including Kilchriest in Co. Longford and Kilchrist and Kilcrist in Tyrone.
