MACGILLIES, Macgilleis, Macgillese, Macgillis: Gaelic Mac Gill' lasa, 'son of the servant of Jesus.' Malcolm Machgilish witnessed a charter by William the Lion at Perth before 1184 (RPSA., p. 225), and is doubtless the Malcolm Mac Gillis who attested the same king's charter of Kinbethach to Gilbert, earl of Strathearn c. 1178-80 (LIM., p. xxiii; Athols, p. 704; Grant, III, p. I). In 1262 an inquisition made at Inverness found that the lands of Mefth (now Meft) had been granted to Eugenius, son of Angus son of Eugenius son of Yothre MacGilhys, thane of Rathven, hereditarily for the service of one serving man and for doing military service at home (APS., I, p. 101; Bain, I, 2323). Tawis M'Gillese was tenant of Dobtoun, Dumfriesshire, 1376 (RHM., I, p. lvi). The hereyeld of one M'Gilhois in Strathern was granted to Richard Broustar, 1507 (ER., XII, p. 498) and stouthreif was made of goods of Donald M'Gillis in Wigtown, 1513 (Trials, I, p. 96). Gilleis McGilleis was concerned in the slaughter of John McAlester, 1538 (RSS., II 2550), Donald M'Illeis was tenant of Balleclauchane, Islay, 1541, and Doule Mcllleis was tenant of Ligin, Islay, in same year (ER., XVII, p. 616,617, 637). William M'Gilleis gave his bond of manrent to George, earl of Huntlie, 1543 (SCM., IV, p. 260), and John M'Gilleis is in township of Dulsanch, Lochalsh, 1548 (RMS., IV, 204). George Macgilleische was reader at Kilmaronock, 1574 (Strathendrick, p. 129 RMR.). The name of Andrew M'Geleis, who appears in regality of Spynie, 1595 (SCM., II, p. 131), is probably another spelling of the name. Mcllchallum Vc illische was charged with violence to Dame Jeane, lady of Ardkinglas, 1596 (RPC., V, p. 322), and John McAndro Vcllleis in Inverness district was fined for reset of Clan Gregor, 1613 (ibid., XIV, p. 629).
