MACGILGUYN: 'Son of Gwyn's gillie.' Gwyn is Welsh form of Finn. Cudbert Mac Gilguyn, juror on inquest on lands in Dumfriesshire, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 216). John de Maghilgoyny, 'Scotsman and late rebel,' to have his lands restored to him, 1305 (ibid., 1696). 'De' is wrong here, due to the ignorance or carelessness of the English scribe to whom such names were a constant stumbling block. Mag = Mac. The same individual appears in 1296 as M'Gilguyr., and in 1303 as M'Kilguiny (Bain, II) See also Macgillegunnxn.
