MACGILLWHINNICH: Gaelic Mac GilleCkoinnich, 'son of Cainnech's gillie,' i.e. Cainnech of Achadh Bo. There was an old Bute family of this name. John Makgylquhinnych was infeft in the lands of Cawnoche there in 1506 (RMS., II, 2987). The name is now Macwhinnie, which see. Donald McGilquhinye or Makgilquhinye was tenant of Westirend of Eddirgolly, 1480 (ER.). There is record of a discharge by Donald McKilchyniche VcDonell VcKyniche alias McCallum, only son of Gilechyniche VcDonnell in Craigdow, 1615 (HP., IV, p. 46). John Roy McKillichinich was charged with horse-stealing, 1750 (Historical papers of Jacobite period, II, p. 569). Old spellings: McGilquhenyie, Makguylquhynne, Makilhannich. See also Macolchynich.
