MacGirr Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Robert M'Girre was in Dalbaitty, 1658 (Dumfries), and Andrew McGirr and James McGirr were residents in the parish of Buittle, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 571), Mac an gheairr, 'son of the short, or low-sized man,' and the name was common in Armagh and Tyrone. "The family is supposed to be of Scottish origin, but is, more probably an offshoot of some native family" (Woulfe, p. 314). There was formerly a McGhirrston in the Stewartry.
This is the most usual form of the name and as such it belongs to Co. Armagh and the adjacent part of Co. Tyrone. In the former it occurs as a “principal Irish name” in the “census” of 1659 and it is also in the hearth money rolls (1664) of that county; three families of the name also appear in the hearth money rolls of Co. Monaghan. It was in Co. Armagh before the plantation of Ulster, recorded in 1602 as MacEghir; as MacGhir and MacGerr we meet it in the Ulster inquisitions (Co. Tyrone) in 1628 and 1639; Shane MacGirr of Fintona, Co. Tyrone, was one of the Jacobites outlawed after 1690; and so to modern birth registrations which show Tyrone to be its location. These also indicate that the variant MacGeer is found in nor h Leinster. There are a few families of the name in Connacht but not enough to justify any form of it being regarded, with Woulfe, as belonging to that province. He mentions Short, Gayer and MacGarr as synonyms of MacGirr. Short is a semi-translation of Mac an Gheairr sometimes used in Co. Tyrone; Gayer is very rare and usually unconnected with MacGirr, being a variant of the English toponymic Gare; MacGarr, when not an abbreviated form of MacGarry, belongs, like MacGeer, to north Leinster and it occurs in the 1659 “census” in Co. Westmeath (bar. Delvin).
Mac an Gheairr An old Co. Armagh name, also found in adjacent Tyrone where it is sometimes made Short by semi-translation. The variant MacGeer is found in north Leinster. SIF 78
