MACGREUSAICH: 'son of the shoemaker' (G. greusaich). Buchanan (p. 141) says the Macgreusichs are originally Buchanans descended from a Buchanan who went to Argyllshire with the laird of Ardkinglass's lady in the reign of JamesIII. In his Enquiry (p. 78) he claims them as a sept of Macfarlane. Murquhow M'Grasycht, John McGrassyeh, and Donald M'Grassycht were residents of Inverness in 1557 and in 1563 (Rec. Inv., p. 6, 7,103). The 'Challar' M'Grasaych Awvllych (= Athollman) was slain at Fortyrgr'l in 1575 (Chr. Fort., p. 140). William McGrasych in Achachrome witnessed an instrument of sasine at Kilchoan in 1585 (Genealogist, new set. XXXVI, p. 79). Agnes McGressiche in Achonacone and Donald Moir M'Gresche in Tombretherlik were charged with murder in 1617 (RPC., XI, p. 187), Finlay Bayne McGressiche in Collonsa was put to the horn in 1629 (ibid., 2. ser. III, p, 46), and Donald M'Gressich is in record in Girgidell, Ardnamurchan, in 1693 (Argyll Inv.). A partial translation of the name is found in 1527, in which year Malcolm Callum Grassichsone had a remission for offences committed by him (RSS., I, 3776). McGreische 1607. See also under Grassick.
